Variation will always exist in a population due to mutation, the sexual process of shuffling alleles, and the complexity of the natural selection process. There are always bound to be, for genetic reasons, foxes with a better sense of smell than others, and these will be better adapted to some environments because a good sense of smell increases the ability to sniff out prey. Such an ability might be especially useful in snowy winters.
